Kenyan entrepreneur Margaret Nyamumbo has made waves on the hit show Shark Tank, securing a $350,000 investment in her female-focused coffee company, Kahawa 1893. With a mission to empower women and challenge the way the coffee industry operates, Margaret’s impressive pitch to the judges left Judge Emma Grede so impressed that she bought 8% of the business.

“Growing up on my grandfather’s coffee farm in Kenya, I saw firsthand the hard work that goes into producing the delicious coffee that grows on our soil. Unfortunately, farmers often struggle to make enough money from their crops, and despite women providing over 90% of the farm labor in coffee, many are not compensated because they do not own the land.” Margaret noted, in her pitch to the judges.

“Kahawa 1893 is on a mission to change that. We source our coffee directly from women farmers in Africa, ensuring fair compensation for their hard work. But we don’t stop there. Customers can also tip the coffee farmers, and Kahawa 1893 matches those tips.” She added.

Margaret founded Kahawa 1893 in 2017, and her business has been rapidly growing ever since. Working with female coffee farmers, she is selling coffee beyond Kenya and Ethiopia and spreading the word about her unique mission. With a focus on sustainability and empowering women, Kahawa 1893 is making a mark in the coffee industry.

As a Harvard Business School Alumni, Margaret aims to take Kahawa 1893 to the next level. Her innovative approach to coffee sourcing and her commitment to female empowerment has caught the attention of Shark Tank judges and coffee lovers alike. With this latest investment, Kahawa 1893 is poised for even greater success in the years to come.

Kahawa 1893 is not just a coffee company, it’s a movement. A movement to empower women and to challenge the way the coffee industry operates. With Margaret at the helm, this company is leading the charge for a more sustainable and equitable coffee industry.
