The Pwani Innovation Week 2024, a groundbreaking event aimed at fostering innovation, youth empowerment, and sustainable development in the coastal region of Kenya, officially commenced today.
The week-long event, themed “Pwani We Desire: Youth, Culture, Peace, and Innovation in the Decade of Action,” is being held from October 14th to 18th in Mombasa.
Organized by the Swahilipot Hub Foundation and its partners, the Pwani Innovation Week seeks to showcase the untapped potential of the region’s youth and create a vibrant innovation ecosystem.
The event will feature a series of workshops, panel discussions, networking opportunities, and exhibitions, highlighting successful youth-led ventures and initiatives.
Today’s workshops include topics like how we can use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance African languages.The session explores the importance of integrating AI technology into preserving and advancing African languages.
Participants are expected to engage in discussions on how AI can be a tool for documentation, translation, and ensuring the longevity of these rich cultural treasures.
More themed workshops will take place throughout the week.
Key Objectives of the Pwani Innovation Week include:
- Showcasing the region’s innovative potential and highlighting successful youth-led ventures.
- Cultivating a vibrant innovation ecosystem by fostering youth participation, equipping them with relevant skills, and creating a conducive environment for talent retention.

- Climate Action: Addressing the impacts of climate change on coastal communities through innovative approaches and adaptive strategies.
- Peace, Inclusivity, and Equity: Building strategies for social cohesion and collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
- Participatory Governance: Promoting citizen science, community-based monitoring, and co-management approaches to empower locals in resource governance.
