Sistema.bio, a leading biogas technology company headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya has announced that it has secured $15 million in new funding to fuel its global growth in providing clean energy and sustainable farming solutions to smallholder farmers.
Led by ElectriFI (managed by EDFI Management Company), this strategic investment fuels Sistema.bio’s global growth strategy.
The company noted that it will broaden its reach, venture into new markets, and further develop its regenerative agriculture offerings to empower one million farmers with sustainable practices by 2025.
This ambitious goal aligns with Sistema.bio’s commitment to combatting climate change, with their innovative technology aiming to reduce 1% of global emissions by 2030.
“This strategic investment underscores the confidence of Sistema.bio’s investors in the company’s mission to scale up its transformative impact across Asia, Africa and Latin America,” said Joyce Cacho, Independent Board Chair at Sistema.bio.
Building on its successful Series B funding in 2022, this latest round includes participation from existing investors such as Chroma Impact Investment, KawiSafi Ventures, and AXA IM Alts.
It is worth noting that the startup’s innovative biogas systems have already been adopted by over 12,000 farms in 31 countries, demonstrating a strong track record of empowering smallholder farmers.
Focus on Africa
With a strategic emphasis on Africa, Sistema.bio operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria, positively impacting over 100,000 farmers in the sub-Saharan region.
The company has also partnered with Engie Access, an off-grid energy service provider to introduce its biogas digesters in Zambia and Mozambique.
Decarbonizing Agriculture
Sistema.bio, dedicated to decarbonizing agriculture through renewable energy and sustainable practices, has set ambitious goals under CEO Alexander Eaton: that is, empowering one million farmers by 2025 and contributing to a 1% reduction in global emissions by 2030.
The firm’s biodigesters not only generate clean energy but also support climate change adaptation by reducing CO₂ emissions and providing biofertilizers that improve soil health and crop yields.
Fueled by this latest funding round, Sistema.bio is poised for further global expansion (in Africa, Asia, and Latin America).
