Bolt Kenya, a leading ride-hailing platform, has introduced a cutting-edge trip anomaly detection system to bolster passenger and driver safety.

Bolt Country Manager, Linda Ndung’u noted that the system, which monitors all trips in real-time, can detect irregularities and alert authorities (Bolt) immediately if a trip is abruptly halted.

“This new feature complements Bolt’s existing safety measures, including an in-app SOS button, trip-sharing functionality, and enhanced driver training,” Ms Ndung’u noted.

The company has also partnered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Association of Professional Associations (APA) to ensure Bolt’s drivers adhere to strict safety guidelines and professional conduct.

In April 2024, Bolt launched its electric motorcycle fleet in Kenya in partnership with M-KOPA.

The company noted that it aims to reduce the initial costs for riders to increase their earnings.

“Running an electric bike is also cheaper, and we aim to reduce the upfront cost for our riders to ensure they have more in their pocket,” Ms Ndungu added.

To address driver concerns about pay, Bolt increased fares by up to 10% in August 2024 following a week-long protest.

The firm emphasized its commitment to fair compensation for drivers, noting that they retain 82% of each fare (Bolt receive an 18% commission).

Bolt also indicated that it is open to adjusting fares based on fuel price fluctuations.
