Google has announced Android XR, a groundbreaking operating system designed for the next generation of immersive computing.
The new platform, developed in collaboration with Samsung, merges years of advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) to power innovative experiences across headsets and glasses.
Expanding Android into XR
Shahram Izadi, Vice President and General Manager of XR at Google, introduced Android XR as a pivotal step in the company’s vision of blending technology with everyday life.
“Today, we’re introducing Android XR, a new operating system built for this next generation of computing,” Mr Izadi said.
Android XR builds on the foundation of Android, which has reached billions of users globally, to create a vibrant ecosystem for developers and device makers. The initial developer preview supports popular tools like ARCore,
Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR, enabling seamless development of apps and games for the platform.
Google is partnering with leading hardware companies, including Qualcomm, Lynx, Sony, and XREAL, to diversify the range of Android XR devices. The company also continues its collaboration with Magic Leap to push the boundaries of AR and AI technologies.
Samsung’s “Project Moohan” to Lead Android XR Hardware
The first device powered by Android XR, code-named Project Moohan, is a Samsung-built headset set to launch next year. These headsets will allow users to effortlessly switch between immersive virtual environments and the real world.
AI takes center stage in the experience with Gemini, Google’s advanced assistant, which offers conversational support for planning, researching, and multitasking.
The integration of familiar Google apps enhances usability, with YouTube, Google TV, and Google Photos reimagined for XR. Users can soar over cities in Google Maps’ Immersive View or multitask effortlessly with Chrome’s virtual screens.
