OpenAI has introduced an experimental service called 1-800-ChatGPT, allowing users to access its Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot through WhatsApp and phone calls.

This innovation aims to make ChatGPT more accessible by eliminating the need for a separate account or app.

Notably, Meta already offers similar functionality with Meta AI on WhatsApp.

How Does It Work?

In the US and Canada, dialing 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) connects users directly to the AI via phone. For WhatsApp users in supported countries, texting the same number enables a chatbot conversation.

In Kenya, users cannot access the service via the phone number. However, they can initiate a chat by scanning a QR code available on OpenAI’s support page. This method works seamlessly, providing easy access to ChatGPT.

What Is 1-800-ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI, 1-800-ChatGPT is an experimental feature designed to make AI interactions more convenient. Users can either call or text the service via WhatsApp without creating a separate account.

Key points to note:

  • ChatGPT will never initiate a call or start a conversation.
  • Conversations can begin by dialing the number from a US or Canadian phone or messaging it via WhatsApp in supported regions.
  • Standard carrier charges may apply.

These updates are part of OpenAI’s ongoing “12 Days of OpenAI” livestream event. Earlier announcements included the launch of Sora, OpenAI’s video generation tool, and ChatGPT Pro, a premium subscription priced at $200. With several days left in the event, OpenAI has teased additional features yet to come.

Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, highlighted the company’s dedication to accessibility, stating:
“We’re only just getting started on making ChatGPT more accessible to everyone.”

For WhatsApp users, clicking a dedicated link or scanning a QR code can also launch a chat with ChatGPT directly.

This initiative underscores OpenAI’s efforts to expand its chatbot’s reach and usability across platforms.
