Kenya has marked Data Privacy Day 2025 with a series of events and conferences aimed at bolstering data protection and digital transformation.

In Eldoret, Cabinet Secretary for Information Communications and The Digital Economy, Mr William Kabogo, alongside Uasin Gishu Governor Dr Jonathan Bii Chelilim, officially launched the Eldoret Regional Offices of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).

This milestone coincided with the Annual Data Privacy Conference held at the Eldoret Sports Club.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, MBS, emphasized the importance of decentralizing ODPC services to ensure accessibility and heightened awareness.

This strategic move reflects ODPC’s commitment to safeguarding personal data as a driver of economic growth and digital transformation.

“This year’s theme, ‘Safeguarding personal data to spur digital transformation and economic development,’ emphasizes the proactive integration of privacy considerations into daily practices, moving away from addressing privacy as an isolated issue,” noted Mr William Kabogo during his address.

National and Regional Efforts to Enhance Data Privacy

At the Nakuru Regional Conference, Deputy Data Commissioner – Corporate Services, Festus Musyoki, hosted Nakuru Deputy County Commissioner Omari Ali, who stressed the need for collaboration with county governments.

“Today, as we commemorate Data Privacy Day, we reflect on the critical need for action at both county and national levels to safeguard privacy in this digital era where technology is reshaping every aspect of our lives,” remarked Dr. Jonathan Bii, Governor of Uasin Gishu.

Meanwhile, Kisumu and Mombasa also hosted regional conferences to underscore the criticality of personal data protection in the digital age.

In Kisumu, experts discussed enhancing awareness and protection strategies, while in Mombasa, Deputy Data Commissioner – Compliance, Rose Mosero, HSC, FIP, welcomed Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor Hassan, HSC, for discussions on strengthening privacy frameworks.

International Collaboration and Economic Opportunities

Kenya’s leadership in data protection and innovation was lauded by Alexander Fierley, Deputy Ambassador of the German Embassy in Kenya, who highlighted Kenya’s efforts in fostering trust, driving innovation, and opening economic opportunities.

“Kenya is paving the way for digital transformation that uplifts every corner of the nation. With strong frameworks, increasing awareness, and collaboration with global partners like Germany, Kenya is well-positioned to secure an adequacy decision granting full access to the lucrative European digital market,” said Mr Fierley.

This move could generate thousands of jobs, attract foreign investment, and unlock unprecedented opportunities.

Showcasing Innovations

As part of the Eldoret celebrations, Mr Kabogo, Dr Bii, and Mr Fierley toured exhibition booths showcasing innovations shaping Kenya’s digital future.

These innovations are key to ensuring Kenya remains a leader in data protection and digital transformation, fostering trust and driving economic growth.

With leaders and stakeholders uniting across the country, the event dubbed #DataPrivacyDay2025 serves as a powerful reminder of Kenya’s commitment to safeguarding personal data and advancing the digital economy for the benefit of all citizens.
