Meta is developing a dedicated application for its AI chatbot, aiming to expand its reach beyond existing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
Reports from CNBC, confirmed by The Verge, indicate the app could launch as early as the second quarter of this year.
This move positions Meta alongside competitors like OpenAI (with ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), and Microsoft (Copilot), all of which have released standalone AI applications.
Meta AI, similar to these rivals, offers a range of functionalities including answering questions, generating and editing images, and now, leveraging its “memory” for improved personalized recommendations.
The decision to create a separate app appears to be a strategic effort to capture users who aren’t already integrated into Meta’s extensive social media ecosystem.
Meta’s aggressive push into the AI sector is evident, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing substantial investments, potentially reaching $65 billion, to fuel the company’s AI ambitions.
Further demonstrating this commitment, Meta is scheduled to host a dedicated AI event on April 29th.
The tech giant introduced LlamaCon, a developer conference that will take place on April 29.
This will be its first development conference dedicated to generative AI, LlamaCon.
The company said it would share the latest open-source AI developments designed to help programmers build apps and products there.
“It follows an unprecedented growth and momentum of our open-source Llama collection of models and tools.”
The news has also drawn attention from industry peers, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman playfully responding to the report with a joke about developing a social app. Meta declined to comment on the report itself.
This development follows Meta’s recent internal news concerning the firing of 20 employees for leaking information.
