Tech giant, Microsoft has hosted Africa’s largest Artificial Intelligence (AI) conference in Nairobi as part of its global AI Tour.

The event comes at a time when AI adoption is rapidly increasing among Kenyan organizations.

Bringing together developers, innovators, and business leaders from both the public and private sectors, the conference also featured key Microsoft executives.

Emphasizing AI’s Role in Kenya’s Digital Future

During her address, Phyllis Migwi, Microsoft Kenya’s Country Manager, highlighted the importance of sustainable technological advancement in securing Kenya’s place in the global digital economy.

“Kenya’s tech sector has a great story to tell when it comes to the adoption of advanced digital tools like AI and machine learning,” she noted. “The AI Tour is Microsoft’s way of highlighting these successes to demonstrate AI’s impact and how organizations can deploy this technology within their own operations. It is our aim to showcase AI’s transformative and innovative potential to empower individuals and businesses in Kenya and beyond.”

The event underscored the necessity of equipping businesses and individuals with the right tools to leverage AI’s potential.

Bridging the AI Skills Gap

Last year, Microsoft launched a training initiative in Kenya, aiming to upskill 1 million people in AI and cybersecurity. This initiative aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and Digital Masterplan, reinforcing Microsoft’s commitment to democratizing AI and ensuring the workforce is ready for the evolving digital landscape.

“As AI continues to revolutionize industries, it is imperative that Kenya equips its workforce with the necessary skills to thrive in this new era,” Ms. Migwi added. “Over the last five years, Microsoft has upskilled more than 4 million young people across Africa through various employability and skilling programs.”

Expanding Digital Infrastructure

Recognizing the need for strong digital infrastructure, Microsoft has been increasing connectivity access through its Airband Initiative, including Project Mawingu.

By the end of 2024, Mawingu’s network was active in 31 Kenyan counties, serving a population of 9.7 million.

In collaboration with Microsoft, Mawingu has provided affordable and reliable internet to schools, health clinics, and small businesses, positively impacting teachers, students, and healthcare workers.

“To drive Kenya’s AI transformation, scalable, secure, and high-speed cloud and AI services are essential,” Ms. Migwi explained. “Microsoft is partnering with G42 to provide this digital framework, bringing advanced AI solutions and digital infrastructure to the country. This is part of a larger $1 billion investment by Microsoft and G42 in Kenya’s digital ecosystem.”

With AI adoption accelerating, Microsoft’s AI Tour is set to play a key role in shaping Kenya’s digital future.
