Mdundo, a popular music streaming platform, has announced that it has reached 36 million monthly active users.
The company is now shifting its focus to hyperlocal markets across Africa to increase artist and advertiser exposure.
Since its launch in Kenya in 2013, Mdundo has grown to become one of the continent’s leading music services.
The platform offers legal and accessible music streaming and downloads. In 2020, Mdundo went public on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market Denmark, leading to a significant increase in user engagement.
The platform’s user base has continued to grow, reaching over 36 million. Mdundo is now focusing on curating specific content for different regions, including Kalenjin and Kamba music in Kenya and Western Uganda, Singeli in Tanzania, and Hausa in Nigeria.
This hyperlocal approach is expected to increase the platform’s appeal to local audiences, as well as provide artists and advertisers with more targeted opportunities.
Mdundo anticipates distributing royalties between US$1.1 million and US$1.3 million by 2025.
Mdundo’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Martin Nielsen said that the company is committed to ensuring that artists receive fair compensation for their work. He added that this will contribute to the growth of individual musicians and the overall development of the African music industry.
Early this year, the company partnered with Kenya’s leading telecommunications company, Safaricom, to introduce a subscription service exclusively to Safaricom customers.
