President Ruto has recently announced significant new visa initiatives aimed at boosting tourism in Kenya.
Transit travelers will now be allowed to step out of the airport premises for business or pleasure, while a new Digital Nomad Work Permit has been introduced to attract global digital professionals.
President Ruto made these announcements during the Magical Kenya Travel Expo 2024 that concluded just last week.
He emphasized the benefits of these initiatives, stating that they will eliminate the boredom of long airport layovers for transit travelers and provide a more attractive work environment for digital nomads.
The new transit and long-connection Electronic Travel Authorisation will allow travelers with 12-hour layovers to explore the city and its surroundings, including visiting national parks and museums. This initiative is expected to provide a significant boost to the tourism sector.
“The Digital Nomad Work Permit is designed to welcome global digital professionals to live and work in Kenya while enjoying the country’s natural beauty. This move aligns with a growing trend across Africa, with several countries introducing similar visa programs,” President Ruto noted.
A Migration Policy Institute report from June 2022 indicated that over 25 countries and territories had implemented digital nomad visa programs.
President Ruto also highlighted Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage and stunning landscapes as key attractions for visitors. He emphasized the country’s commitment to tourism, noting that it is a fundamental pillar of the Kenyan economy.
In 2022, Kenya’s international tourist arrivals increased by 70.45% to 1,483,752 up from 870,465 in 2021 , generating Sh268.09 billion in revenue. The country aims to attract over 2.5 million tourists by the end of this year and 5 million annually by 2027.
To achieve this goal, Kenya is focusing on promoting its diverse cultural heritage and offering a variety of experiences for visitors.
By providing convenient visa options and facilitating seamless travel experiences, Kenya is positioning itself as a welcoming and attractive destination for global travelers.
