Nairobi-based cleantech firm, Sistema.bio has secured $3.5 million from Novastar Ventures to expand its biogas technology and digital solutions for smallholder farmers across Africa.

This investment is part of a larger $7.75 million internal round for Sistema.bio.

Novastar Ventures, a firm known for supporting startups tackling key challenges in Africa, made the investment through its Africa People + Planet Fund III.

This fund focuses on sustainability and economic growth, aiming to raise over $200 million for climate solutions and agricultural investments.

Sistema.bio’s biogas technology offers a sustainable solution for family farmers. It converts animal waste into renewable energy for cooking and electricity, while also creating biofertilizer to improve soil health.

The company operates in over 12,000 farms across 31 countries, positively impacting more than 100,000 farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

This technology benefits farmers in several ways:

Sistema.bio’s recent acquisition of Inclusive Energy bolstered its digital monitoring and verification (MRV) capabilities. This allows for:
